During this process of tearing apart and re-building, RJ was hard at work too. She had managed to scrub the entire roof of The Odyssey down.
We spent some time peeling off old caulking and getting it ready for taping, pre-applying silicone caulking to some seams. During this time I distinctly remember being how impressed with how sturdy the Odyssey roof was compared to our Dolphin Serenity- it was built like a rock.
During this time Laura and I had taken a trip to Anchorage, and picked up a new tank vent cap that was missing from one of the vent stacks.
We un-fastened the solar panel to be able to tape and paint around it as we made our way working across the roof.
Now this is another one of those points we tried something different than what we had done on Serenity to try and cut cost- instead of Gaco Tape we decided to try using Grace Vycor Tape. It was available in wider sizes- so we could do the corner seams without having to overlap 2 runs of tape (Like with the Gaco Tape) to cover the corners. It seemed like tough stuff, but with that it was a lot harder to work with and shape as well. (I know, I know… now. You are supposed to use a heat gun as you apply it! We learned this in a little bit.)
But in the end- we got it taped. π
With the taping done– We painted the first coat of Gaco on the roof (When I say we- I have to give official credit to Laura and RJ busting it out!) After that dried they painted the roof in Gaco grey. And with the roof officially sealed up we bolted the solar panel back in place.
